Allen Engineering Corporation (AEC) recently delivered a 162’ Model 6048 Bridge Deck Finisher to PCR Contractors in Windsor Ontario Canada to be used on the 11 kilometer Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway project. The $1.4 billion highway infrastructure project is under construction in the municipalities of Windsor, LaSalle and Tecumseh, in Ontario Canada.
The Herb Gray Parkway is a link that will carry car and truck traffic from Hwy 401 in Canada to a new crossing across the Detroit River to I-75 in Michigan. This undertaking will improve traffic flow at Canada’s premier trade gateway and is unprecedented in its community enhancement and environmental features for the highway, anywhere in Ontario.
The project consists of 11 tunnels of which 7 will be constructed by PCR Contractors. Because of the length and width of the tunnels, the covers were designed to be poured in transverse strips, some as wide as 48 meters (158’), with each pour consuming 800 to 1,000 cubic meters of concrete that is being placed with three pump trucks. These 7 tunnel covers will require PCR to make 33 individual pours using an Allen Bridge Deck Finisher.
To accomplish these extreme pour widths, PCR Contractors relied on AEC to provide them with a 162’ long Allen Model 6048 Bridge Deck Finisher. Allen designed this machine using their standard 48” deep truss system and added a transition truss system to increase the mainframe of the machine to 66” tall which enabled the machine to span the 162’ length.
In conjunction with finishing these extremely wide slabs, PCR also has to apply curing materials to the slabs. To accomplish this, Allen provided their Model 4834 Motorized Work Bridge with a rolling work platform attached to it. This allowed the contractor to cover the slabs with curing materials with minimal man power.
