As friends new and old arrived at Allen Engineering (AEC) headquarters, 50 years of memories were brought back to life. On April 24th, Allen retirees, current vendors, local dignitaries and AEC employees gathered to celebrate what so few “Family-Owned, American-Made” companies can be proud of - 50 years of successful business. From small beginnings in Piggott, Arkansas to worldwide leader in concrete equipment manufacturing, the journey has not been easy – but if it were easy, this celebration wouldn’t have meant as much!
Guests from all over the country came to celebrate this momentous occasion. From AEC’s first dealer, Star Equipment in Iowa, to one of AEC’s first employees, the party was not short on nostalgia. A slideshow presentation played in the background that included pictures all the way back to 1964, when Dewayne and Mary Ann Allen first started what was to become Allen Engineering Corporation. Along with former employees and business partners, AEC welcomed several notable political individuals including Arkansas State Senator Robert Thompson, Arkansas Speaker of the House Davy Carter, and Paragould Chamber of Commerce’s Sue McGowan. AEC also welcomed Congressman Rick Crawford (R-AR) as the guest speaker. Leaders from the equipment industry also made time to come and congratulate AEC on the special anniversary. Notables included Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) President Dennis Slater, who made the trip all the way from Wisconsin, and Wayne Walley, Editor of Rental Equipment Register, the American Rental Association official magazine. All in all, nearly 300 people made their way onto AEC’s headquarters to commemorate the occasion.
Attendees heard a few words from AEC President Jay Allen who had not forgotten the importance of this celebration. “Today we are celebrating a unique dream; the dream to start a company from nothing and to grow it into an enterprise that makes a difference in people’s lives around the world. That dream, and this business started in a small rural town in Arkansas and has spread to over 60 countries.”
The AEC staff also presented a token of their appreciation to Dewayne and Mary Ann – a sketch drawing of them from the early years of AEC. In conclusion, Dewayne had this to offer those in attendance, “It’s been a good run. Anyone in this room has the same opportunity we had, if you want to take the chance. But if you do, you need to have a burning desire in your belly before you start. If you don’t have that, don’t worry about it, it won’t work.”
